Digitally remastered by Erick Labson (MCA Music Media Studios, North Hollywood, California). As noted jazz historian Will Friedwald points out in his extensive, erudite liner notes for MCA's 1994 compilation LOUIS ARMSTRONG'S ALL-TIME GREATEST HITS, Armstrong had sung throughout his lengthy recording career. But it was only after younger black singers such as Billy Eckstine and Nat King Cole broke through pop music's color barrier that producer Milt Gabler repositioned Armstrong as a popular singer in the Crosby/Sinatra mold. It was a wise decision. Even if Armstrong had not made his name as one of the most influential players and bandleaders in jazz history, the image of Louis Armstrong in the last two decades of his career-nattily attired in an immaculate suit behind the microphone, white handkerchief in one hand and rarely-played trumpet in the other-is one of popular music's most enduring archetypes. This well-chosen 18-track compilation collects all of Armstrong's best and most beloved vocal performances and features excellently remastered sound.
