While the band used to be straight-up Hair Metal in their ‘80s heyday, MAD MAX’s recent releases have opted for a smoother, more melodic AOR sound. Lighthearted Rock songs like ”Family Of Rock”, ”Heaven Is…”, ”Change It”, and ”Glorious Night” abound on ”White Sands”. For the most part, they’re catchy little tracks, but many of them plod along at a seemingly interminable tempo.

Fortunately, the remedy for this is some good ol’ Hair Metal anthems. ”We Fight In White” is a rowdy, up-tempo rocker that is representative of a bygone era where jumpsuits and Aqua Net were the order of the day. ”War”, the album closer, is a fairly powerful song; rather than Hair Metal, ”War” is closer to straight-up Heavy Metal, with vocalist Michael Voss actually rasping out the chorus with all the venom he can muster.
While MAD MAX deserve applause for their hard work in releasing this album so soon after their last one, it appears as though it could’ve spent a bit more time on the cooker. MAD MAX’s particular brand of Metal has been done many times before and much better. There are possibly two keepers on ”White Sands” (”We Fight In White” and ”Someone Like You”) and the rest are more or less filler. Take your time with the next release, boys, and give us something worthwhile. Also, Voss needs to start shrieking on those ballads as well as he does on the Metal songs; trust me, it’ll work.
