from directors at the forefront of the new wave of moving image.
released 11th oct 2004. leading graphic talents include precursor,
richard fenwick, intro, pleix and psyop with rising stars ruben fleischer,
simon robson and dan chambers to create a vibrant
and essential mix of creative visions and styles.

continuing onedotzeroТs strong affiliation with pioneering music styles
and independent labels, music featured includes aphex twin [warp],
mogwai [pias], alongside this yearТs hotly tipped artists madvillain [stones throw],
dj format and 2004Тs mercury music prize winners, franz ferdinand.

the majority of the material on the dvd is part of current onedotzero8 programming,
which originally screened at the flagship festival in may 2004, and is now
touring internationally across asia, europe, americas, australia, and the uk.


[01] take me out: franz ferdinand
glaswegian four piece franz ferdinandТs art school background
is clearly evidenced in this promo.
it melds dadaist and constructivist images into a photographic montage
with the bandТs staccato, stupendous performance.
30Тs busby berkley routines, victorian automata and russian propaganda
are all worked in odellТs considerable animation.

[02] rnd#oo safety procedures
onedotzero stalwart fenwick completes his 20th rnd film
on manТs contention with modern life and technology.
this time he targets the friendly skies - the absurdity of the in-flight safety
procedure is played out in graphic, safety-card detail as events go askance.
visual wit and humour undercuts the fear and turbulence
of our times in the airЕ brace brace!

[03] polemia
the day before today, yesterday came and went.
polemia is a moving representation of chapter one
of the neasden control centre book Ц tracing the body from light to dark,
day to night, reality to dream.
a journey through time and space from birth to death.
world premiere, created for onedotzero8.

[04] murmurs of earth - side b
a follow up to their murmurs of earth project Ц a motion
graphic earth time capsule for alien consumption.
how would our friends in outer space comprehend the delights of disco dancing,
70Тs dining dйcor and fairy cakes? a space travelling pod that reveals
the innate shallowness of humanity in bite-sized portions Ц a love letter
to the universe in luscious logan-motion.
made as part of getty images big idea project.

[05] we know something you don't know: dj format
when the band could not make the shoot date ever inventive fleischer came up
with a cute and cuddly idea to replace them and meet the deadline.
he delivered much more than that with a hyper funny and seriously
shot hip hop style video with a twist.
the crew cruise in animal outfits complete with break dancing sharks,
lino-spinning turtles and phat bears in the hood.
full throttle humour and talent to the max.

[06] e-baby
a deceptive contemplation on technology and nurture.
a baby lives, breathes and grows inside a computer-controlled incubator.
the СmotherТsТ only contact with the baby is via black rubber-gloved robotic hands.
a glitch in the system causes the fallible automatic foster system to break down.
a personal short from paris based collective that are increasingly in demand.
music by pleix regular collaborators the scintillating bleip.

[07] drum machine
japanese kodo drummers in bright 3d, beat out a hefty tune,
using their heads in place of sticks Ц so simple, so effective.
as each head hits the beat our smiles become laughter.
initially an interactive animation for uk designers tokyo plastic it has gone
on to win the audience award at sundance 2004 and finalist
at the flash forward festival Ц and itТs only getting started.

[08] tube mice
all is not right underground. the tube is in chaos yet no one knows why.
whatТs more the mice are disappearing.
who is the dark figure taking a fervent interest in both?
meanwhile deep below something is tremblingЕa colourful and comic tale
from comedy director and designer, chambers that sees him move
into a slight longer length from his standout shorts,
the amazing adrenalini brothers and cult web hit the pygmy shrew.
tube mice was produced by onedotzero as part of the pulse digital short film scheme
with film london funded by uk film council shorts new cinema fund.

[09] anthem
super strong new york outfit psyop turn it up:
a СmanifestoТ self promotional, motion graphic,
film with a twist Ц encouraging new brands to work with them!
a tongue-in-cheek stab at commercialism in a fairy tale landscape of rainbow hills,
bouncy, bleeding characters and pipette-beaked birdies.
go on buy me, you know you want to!

[10] quietus
a microcosmic organo-tech world Ц a complete cycle of artificial life
from broadcast and motion design unit.
based on ideas of juxtaposition and contrast, life and death,
the exquisite and the grotesque, the mechanic and the organic, order and chaos.
precursor used lush manipulated photography twinned
with sound by si begg to complete the effect.

[11] what barry says
an uncompromising examination and criticism of u.s. foreign policy,
according to barry, the directorТs friend
from down the local pub - a Сlefty old hippyТ.
his monologue is sharply interpreted in motion graphics using iconographic styles
from war pamphlets to stencil graffiti, which give visual form and resonance
to his argument. Сsoon there will be no political middle groundТ.
created for onedotzero8 and already picking up festival awards internationally.

[12] fly
a brand new work from hot, brazillian boutique,
nakd with an unreleased plastiq phantom track.
based on a true storyЕ the audio track came
from a fly being trapped in the sound studio.
the bugТs perspective was re-created in cg to create
Сa micro voyage into a macro world of confusion, disarray and eventual demise.Т

[13] hunted by a freak: mogwai
a tale of twisted torture Ц a psycho boy with an attraction to small animals gets
his kicks by throwing the little cuties of the top floor of a high-rise building.
music video as urban horror tale for scottish post-rockers extraordinaire mogwai.
3d high colour, dark humour animation
from this leading toronto-based animation studio.

[14] baghdad blog
punchy, hard-hitting and direct, graphic web promo for salam paxТs book of his blog
[media-savvy iraqi net-addict started a web log and
accidentally became the world's most famous web-diarist].
intro more than pack a graphic punch to match
the emotional and loaded charge of paxТs missives.
commissioned by screenbase for canongate books with music from salam's idol,
warps very own aphex twin.

[15] all caps: madvillain
60Тs comic-book capers with a gangster twist Ц hip hop action in trench coats
and fedora hats referencing the era of jack kirby.
this promo was created with good, old fashioned pen and paper, then scanned in,
and composited using about 1000 different drawings.
reitano and his tfu [thunder from under] studios work in comics, graphics and
illustration shines through in this fresh hip hop noir for our two heroes,
doom and madlib and their urban capers.

[16] opto-scientific
kinetic simplicity - an abstract ode to the father of op-art, vasarely.
it was created for an installation at his eponymous foundation.
commissioned by warp records, the republicТs matt pyke wanted this video projection
to be shown in isolation in a modernist hexagonal room in the foundation in france
to give it a space and dynamism vasarely would expect.

[17] violence
immediately in your face short with a layered
and graphic use of flash to jocular effect.
an exposition of the darker side of humanity
from video games designer and animator crowle.
the wrestler, chad montreaux welcomes us to violence and itТs voracious appetiteЕ
a dangerously cruel creation that will more than delight in the dark side.

[18] fat bros: hifana
more animated mayhem by w+k tokyo lab,
taking the hifana brothersТ original character designs,
illustrating their shiny and dark sides,
through captain surrealТs animation blender,
to create a cornucopia of colour and compositing action.
a gob-smacking cocktail of sweet graphic havoc with many eye-popping sequences:
an instant throbbing hip-hop promo gem.

[19] fake
a welcome return to onedotzero from this hamburg-based designer
makes a graphical study of his home city, underground and overground,
a statement testifying to the decay and regeneration of a modern german city.
a film made very much with audio talent and regular collaborator
boris salchow specially produced for and premiered at onedotzero8.

[20] wanna be that way: ikara colt
rising star, woof ban bau uses the comic book dynamic
to transport a performance video to a new world and new heights.
frenetic action matches the explosive, white heat of ikara coltТs wanna be this way.
it masterly meshes an aggressive performance from within a black and white
comic strip cityscape that burst with energy and impact.
